Though everything in the game is inspired by Counter-Strike's aesthetic, there is a Korean chic to it all. The Korean version of quakemod would yell "Firstblood!" Just seconds after the classic "Alright, let's go." The funniest bit of this was not in the sound, but in the decorations. They would switch from classic Source sound effects to notably higher definition Korean-styled replications. Though the M4 looks pretty realistic, the SG looks like it belongs in the hands of the Soldier. However, its art-style sometimes walks the line between the realism of Counter-Strike and the cartoonish style of TF2. Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you, I guess.
(Maybe some were classics too, but I'm not too familiar with 1.6.) Most seemed to intentionally replicate their 1.6 counterparts, though the HD textures didn't match how bare bones the layouts were.Īesthetically, it is much more of an HD 1.6 than GO. Additionally, there were a ton of special maps. Instead offering you loud outs much like Call of Duty or something.Īll the classic maps were there: Nuke, Dust 2, Inferno, Assault, etc. Since it hides away most guns in an unlocking system, it seems to do away with almost THE defining piece of Counter-Strike, restriction-free gun access. Being a Korean F2P game, it's got all the bells and whistles.
However, not long ago the sequel was released and that is where I begin my story.Ĭounter-Strike Online 2 is a strange beast. The first iteration of this was mostly just a reskin of Sudden Attack. Hoping to keep the name known in Korea, Valve turned to the producer of their overseas competition, Nexon, to produce a more Asian-accommodated style and monetization system. Previously Special Forces seemed to be the top dog. (Every trick you see Valve doing with DotA 2, TF2, and CS:GO has been done tried and seen true by these many clones, whether it be gun skins, character costumes, character accessories, etc.) Likely the most popular clone right now is Sudden Attack. So, as it died out, many 1.6 clones came in to replace it over the years, but with many more means of monetization.

Additionally, you're unable to download games the PC방 doesn't offer already, assuming you had access to GO. So the premium between them and the game, previously Source but now GO, is often too large of a hurdle for anyone that primarily games in PC방's. There are avid players sticking to 1.6, seemingly 'till they die, though. So ever since Steam came out as a way to counteract piracy of Valve games, Counter-Strike has dwindled in popularity.

Though their gaming culture is much more familiar to me than say Japan, since they play PC games most often, it's still quite different.įirst rule of PC방: If your game costs money, it's not going to do well. Additionally, since, at least last time I checked, this isn't able to played abroad, I figured maybe some other CS players might be interested in what our Asian counterpart is like. Being a student in game design, these differences are deeply interesting to analyze and understand.
So I've been staying in Gangnam, Seoul, South Korea these last few days and I always find visiting PC방's (PCbangs) to be an adventure into another world of gaming. 2,099 CCT_RU4įACEIT w/ GeT_RiGhT & lose game = 5subs |.
